Twenty years ago, on July 3rd, my journey to Iraq began with the raising of this American flag at our home. As I reflect on that pivotal time in my life, the memories of service and sacrifice are ever-present. I love how these photos capture the simplicity and beauty of a moment I will forever cherish.

In one picture, you can see my sons Cody and Clint helping me raise Old Glory on the pole for the first time. As we unfurl the Flag, my heart fills with great hope. No matter the strife, conflict, or war, Old Glory soars as a symbol of that which is most beautiful, most wonderful.

Old Glory shines brightly, a beacon for those who search for light and hope as they navigate the storms of life, the challenges of their everyday journey. This Flag, our Flag, represents the ideals and freedoms that so many, including myself, and our sons Cody, Clint, and Brenin, have stood to defend.

As we celebrate Independence Day this week, I encourage you to remember all those who have stood to defend, and vow to never forget they who “laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.”

The beauty of Old Glory can fill us with delightful moments of wonder, but only if we allow ourselves moments to pause so we can experience that wonder. Yet, even with all Her beauty, and all Her glory, we still face many of the same challenges as when we fought for our independence as a country. We honor those who stood to defend Old Glory, and those who stand today, rising in their confident greatness to be a valiant light of hope, be it on the battlefields of war or paving the streets of life with compassionate kindness.

I share my voice to empower you to create your own story of greatness, knowing we will stand stronger when we are united together. However you celebrated Independence Day, may you be blessed to Stand for the Flag by standing for all She beautifully represents.
