Monday Morning Boost – The Gift of Feeling Home for Christmas
One of the most heartwarming aspects of the Christmas season is the magnetic pull to be with family. No matter where we are or who we are, the yearning to be “home” seems universal.
This longing transcends differences in belief or tradition. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas as a deeply religious occasion, a cultural festivity, or simply a cherished time of year, there’s a unique spirit that blankets the world. It whispers of belonging, love, and the warmth of home.
Bing Crosby captured this sentiment in the hauntingly beautiful lyrics of I’ll Be Home for Christmas.
“I’ll be home for Christmas… if only in my dreams.”
Sung from the perspective of a World War II soldier longing for home, the song captures both the joy of imagining home and the ache of being away.
I know that ache.
CHRISTMAS IN IRAQ
I spent Christmas of 2004 far from home as a soldier in Iraq, where the only connection to Christmas for me was “only in my dreams.”
It’s a memory I cherish because, despite the miles separating me from family and the comforts of home, there was still something extraordinary. There was hope, love, and even moments of peace–feelings I believe were anchored in the story of Christmas itself.
On the Monday preceding Christmas, I’ll share a story with you–about a soldier, a shepherd, and a flock of sheep. It’s a story that reminds me that being “home” is sometimes less about where we are and more about what we carry in our hearts.
WHEN HOME FEELS FAR AWAY
Distance isn’t the only reason home might feel out of reach during the holidays.
You could be surrounded by loved ones and still feel distant. Maybe life’s challenges–loneliness, depression, financial burdens, health struggles, or the deep ache of loss–make the idea of home feel unattainable.
If that’s where you find yourself this Christmas, I hope you’ll find comfort in the most extraordinary gift of all.
Two thousand years ago, a Baby was born in a humble manger. His arrival brought into the world the gifts of hope, love, joy, and peace.
These gifts are freely given, available to every one of us, no matter where we are or what we’re facing. And in their purest form, these gifts can help us feel at home–wherever we may be.
CREATING HARMONY THIS CHRISTMAS
In last week’s Monday Morning Boost, I shared ideas for “Creating Harmony During the Holidays.” Embracing the concept of harmony has helped me feel greater peace and more of that feeling of being home for Christmas.
This season, I invite you to embrace the moments that will help you feel at home, and then find your way to share with others.
- Focus on three small ways to create harmony for yourself or your loved ones.
- Connect with three people who may need to feel at home in your heart this Christmas.
- Center your vision on three priorities that will bring peace to your holiday season.
Feeling at home, even if only in your dreams, is one of the greatest blessings of the season.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
May this season bring you a sense of home, wherever you are, and the gift of peace that only Christmas can bring.
