Sunday Reflections: Surely The Lord Is In This Place

Sunday Reflections: Surely The Lord Is In This Place

In the well-known poem “Footprints In The Sand”, a weary traveler realizes “at the very lowest and saddest times in his life” there was just one set of footprints. Upon sharing his concerns, the Lord gently teaches His “precious child” that “During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

The Old Testament Prophet Jacob, as he dreamed of a ladder reaching up into heaven, also discovered the Lord would be with him in all that he does, as recorded in Genesis chapter 28.

“And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.”

This helped Jacob to more fully realize, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not.”

In all the places we journey, the Lord is right there with us. When times are the hardest He is there to support and carry. When times are easier, as the Footprints In The Sand also indicate, He is right there walking beside us.

The Christian hymn “Nearer, My God, to Thee” softly echoes Jacob’s journey with the Lord, and perhaps also our own.

Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!
