Monday Morning Boost: Leading In A Crisis

The world took a turn in the spring of 2020 when a Coronavirus in the form of COVID-19 created a worldwide pandemic.

The resulting impact, which we are still in the middle, has the world practicing “social distancing.” The new mantra of the day is “Stay Home–Stay Safe.” Mothers all over the world are rejoicing as kids of all ages have finally learned how to wash their hands!

The pandemic health crisis has seen hundreds of thousands of people infected with nearly 100,000 deaths at the time of this writing. Quarantines of 14 days and self-isolation are mandatory for any person suspected of exposure to the virus. Communities, states, and even entire nations are on lockdown.

Many businesses have been ordered to temporarily close. Sales are down for nearly every business category.  In just the first few weeks some of those businesses have totally closed, including some I know personally. Over 16 million people in the United States have lost their jobs in the first few weeks.

And every one of these numbers is rising. It’s safe to say we are in a crisis.

As leaders, our entire job description is summed up in two words: Solve Problems.

We are paid to solve problems. For ourselves, for our team, for our customers. Solving problems means we are creating solutions that help people.

Solving problems and creating solutions is hard work. So is changing our story.

And that’s a good thing.

If changing our leadership story, finetuning our company strategy, and creating better ways to serve our customers was easy, then we just may not put forth the requisite effort to stay in business.

Robert R. Updegraff, author of the 1916 book “Obvious Adams: The Story of a Successful Businessman,” said we ought to be glad for our troubles.

“You ought to be glad for the troubles on your job because they provide about half your income. If it were not for the things that go wrong, the difficult people with whom you deal, and the problems of your working day, someone could be found to handle your job for half of what you are being paid. So start looking for more troubles. Learn to handle them cheerfully and with good judgment, as opportunities rather than irritations, and you will find yourself getting ahead at a surprising rate. For there are plenty of big jobs waiting for people who are not afraid of troubles.”
