Monday Morning Boost: “Give What Hurts”

Monday Morning Boost: “Give What Hurts”

When it comes to “Building A Community… A Business… [and] A Team,” the focus of the Intermountain Growth Summit Elisa and I attended Friday at Utah State University’s Huntsman School of Business, Ashray Cooper said you need to “give what hurts.”

Arshay Cooper understands what it means to give what hurts.

Raised on the West Side of Chicago by a single mom in a neighborhood surrounded by gangs and drugs, life was anything but easy for Ashray. But a chance encounter changed Arshay’s life. In 1997, he joined (and later became captain of) the first All-Black high school rowing team at Manley High School. Ironically, the team was comprised of rival gang members who turned from fighting against each other to learning to row together.

Ashray’s story has been turned into a story and now the critically acclaimed film “A Most Beautiful Thing.” Have you seen the show? You can watch it on Amazon Prime or Peacock.

Here are three key insights Ashray shared that connected with me.

POWER OF THREE – OKAY, LET’S CALL IT POWER OF FOUR!

ALIGNMENT – Create alignment with and lead people with diverse cultures, backgrounds, AND ideas. Recognize those:

  • Who are willing to do.
  • Who are able to do
  • Who gets things done
  • Who wants it more than anyone else

GIVE TILL IT HURTS – Give away what hurts to get the results you desire.

  • Give away your time.
  • Give away your talents.
  • Give away your treasures.”

WORK HARD – Develop your work hard ethics to help others.

  • Work for free
  • Build relationships
  • Help people along the way

THE BOATHOUSE RULE – “Leave the boathouse better than you found it. Even if you didn’t make the mess.”

  • Show up every day to work
  • Make the spot better for the next person
  • This will also make things better for you

Have a great Monday! Thanks for letting me share!
