Monday Morning Boost: Goals Are Dead – Promises Are Sure

Monday Morning Boost: Goals Are Dead – Promises Are Sure

We set goals with childlike enthusiasm, salivating over the anticipated reward of a chocolate drizzled ice cream sundae with a ravishing bright red cherry on top while begrudgingly calling ourselves a worthless piece of rubbish because we have convinced ourselves we’ll never stick with it — whatever it is — so let’s just give up now.

Goal is a dead word with no meaning for most people…

Including me.

A lifetime of setting goals with no results has validated my claim. Even SMART goals fail to motivate action.

For me, and for most.

So I make myself a promise instead.

A promise is NOT a dead word. It has meaning, purpose, and it is sacred. And we don’t break sacred promises.

Well, at least not very easy.

It’s important we recognize sometimes even sacred promises are broken. But that doesn’t mean we are broken. But it does mean we have the opportunity to make it right, get back up, and work on keeping that promise.

Even if we have to get up over and over and over.

Getting up is the key.

A goal is too often a lofty, undefined, and wishful guess whereas a promise is focused on the action that gets you to where you want to be.

Action creates Results which makes Impact.

My friend Jason Hewlett introduced me to the concept of elevating our goals into promises.

“The greatest joy and fulfillment are within your reach, but they require an enduring Promise to The One… someone you might not expect. It’s not your boss, your spouse, your children, or others — no, the ultimate commitment is The Promise you make to yourself to discover your purpose and gifts and share them with the world.”

Who is The One?

I am. You are.

  • ❤️ I will intentionally create a story of love and greatness.
  • ❤️ I will stay present and engaged.
  • ❤️ I will get back up, every time, no matter what

We keep getting back up…

That’s the Power of a PROMISE!

We become the Little Engine That Could, the child who cries, then laughs, then gets back up. Over and over again, and again and again. No matter what.

A promise means something.
